How many people live in Memphis?

The population of the actual city of Memphis was 650,618 in 2018. In 2017, the Greater Memphis area had a population of 1,348,260, making it the 42nd largest metropolitan area in the US.


How big is Memphis?

Memphis is approximately 324 square miles. It spreads out in the southwest corner of Tennessee to the Arkansas and Mississippi border. The Memphis metropolitan area includes several cities and large suburbs, including Germantown, Collierville, Southaven, and more.


What cities surround Memphis?

The Greater Memphis area is comprised of cities in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Neighboring townships in Tennessee include Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Arlington, Lakeland, and Millington. Nearby Arkansas cities include West Memphis and Marion. At the southern border of Memphis are the cities of Horn Lake, Olive Branch, and Southaven, Mississippi.


Does Memphis have an airport?

The Memphis International Airport is located about seven miles southeast of downtown Memphis. It services approximately 140,000 passengers each month. It is also the global hub for FedEx Express. Airlines that fly into Memphis include Allegiant Air Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Envoy Air, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines.


Who is the mayor of Memphis?

There are two mayors in the Memphis area- the mayor of the city of Memphis and the mayor of Shelby County.The current mayor of Memphis, TN is Jim Strickland. The current mayor of Shelby County is Lee Harris. The mayors of some of the neighboring cities in Tennessee include:

What is Memphis known for?

Memphis is known as the home of the blues, as well as the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll music. From B.B. King to Elvis Presley, many music greats have either played in Memphis or called Memphis home. Memphis is also known for its prominent role in the American civil rights movement. In fact, Memphis is home to the National Civil Rights Museum. When it comes to cuisine, Memphis is known for its world-famous BBQ.

There is something for everyone in Memphis. You can visit iconic Beale Street, or enjoy the great outdoors at Shelby Farms, one of the nation’s largest urban parks. Other notable places to visit include Elvis’ Graceland, Sun Studios, The Stax Museum, the world-renowned Memphis Zoo,  the historic Peabody Hotel, a large public park system, the Greenline, Mud Island Theme Park, and more.


When was Memphis founded?

Memphis was founded in 1819 by Andrew Jackson, John Overton, and James Winchester. Because of its location on the river, they named it after ancient Egypt’s capital city, located on the Nile River. Memphis was formally incorporated as a city in 1826.

Memphis is located at the southwest corner of Tennessee, bordered by Arkansas and Mississippi. The city is situated on a large bluff beside the Mississippi River, giving it the nickname the Bluff City.
